style="text-align:">Nova Scotia’s Fundy tides rise and fall by as much as 16 metres daily, making them the highest in the world. The town of Wolfville, Nova Scotia experiences its own tidal effect every September, when more than 3,000 students from around the world come rushing into Acadia University, drawn by its reputation for academic excellence and its focus on providing a personalized education.“Acadia is a fine university in all kinds of ways – it is palpable – you can feel the commitment to a high quality education and you see it by the awards to faculty and the success of our students and our alumni,” says Ray Ivany, Acadia’s 15th president and vice-chancellor. “Acadia’s commitment to academic rigour and excellence is obviously part of who we are, and part of being a top-tier university in Canada, and in the world.”

Acadia was built on the belief that everyone has a right to higher education, regardless of class, belief, gender, or race. In 1838, at a time when money was scarce, the community pulled together to create a special place for learning. Women knitted and sold mittens to raise funds and canvassed for materials; men felled trees and built the first academic halls – Acadia University was established. Acadia’s stylized “A” depicts crossed axes to remind us of the determination and pride that is the Acadia Spirit. That spirit has sparked many successes for Acadia.

The university has the distinction of being the only Canadian university inducted into the Smithsonian Institution for its pioneering use of technology in the classroom. Acadia professors continue to set the standard for innovative classroom instruction today. Acadia is also the only university to have placed first in all four categories (best overall, highest quality, most innovative, and leaders of tomorrow) in Maclean’s annual reputation survey. In the 18 years that Maclean’s has done this survey, Acadia has ranked as the most innovative undergraduate institution 15 times.

“Acadia’s combination of small, personalized classes and a rich computing environment provides special opportunities for Acadia students,” explains Tom Herman, Acadia’s vice-president, academic. “In particular, the lines between teaching and research become blurred and teachers spend as much time mentoring students in research as they do in standard classroom activities.”

More than 170 years after its founding, the world is witnessing the influence of this liberal arts university – one whose visionary approach to academic excellence is setting a new high-tide mark around the world.

Student Life
<p

Algoma University is a place where students can step into leadership roles, both on campus and in the community.

At Algoma U, every student will find a place to belong.

Administration

Algoma University is governed by two bodies: the Board of Governors and the University Senate.

The Board of Governors is comprised of between 12 and 30 individuals, and is responsible for the government, conduct, management, and control of the University and its property.

Our Faculty

When you come to Algoma University, you’ll discover what it’s like to have professors who take an active interest in you and your goals – professors who actually want to know who you are and what will help you succeed. The faculty members you encounter will encourage creativity, imagination, critical thinking and risk-taking. At Algoma U, our professors are academically accomplished, deeply committed to excellence in teaching, and fully focused on student success.

Research

As Algoma University seeks to fulfill its mission to offer an exceptional undergraduate education, research plays an increasingly important role. We recognize that all faculty research is a valuable component of that mission, and as we proudly grow in our new role as Ontario’s nineteenth autonomous university, we will distinguish ourselves through the people and issues of the region we serve. In particular, research at Algoma University will recognize the significant importance and contribution of the First Nations.

We recognize also that research opportunities provide students with the skills, techniques and cutting-edge knowledge that will enable them to become agents of positive change in their communities through knowledge transfer and cultural enrichment.

George Leach Centre

Opened in September 1992, the 39,000 square foot George Leach Centre (GLC) provides a wide range of facilities for athletics, fitness and recreation. Access to the GLC is available to students of Algoma University as well as the broader community.

The George Leach Centre is also the home of Algoma University’s varsity basketball teams and other intercity and intramural sports. Click here for more information about Athletics and Recreation at Algoma University.

Conference Facilities

Why not host your next conference at Algoma University? We’re located in the east end of beautiful Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, right next to the St. Mary’s River.

Shingwauk Hall, a historical landmark in the community, offers first-rate modern facilities making Algoma University the perfect meeting place for conferences of any size.

Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig

As part of Algoma University’s commitment to providing a respectful, inclusive and innovative educational environment for Anishinaabe (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) students, the University has entered into a Covenant with the Shingwauk Education Trust. The Covenant is a solemn document through which both parties pledge to work together for the furtherance of Anishinaabe education and research. The two partners are following the Two Row Wampum model of development – each partner respecting the other and supporting the other in the pursuit of their goals.

The Shingwauk Education Trust has established Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig, which offers courses and programs of particular interest to Anishinaabe students. These courses and programs are fully credited through Algoma University or other partner institutions. Algoma U students are welcome to take Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig courses, and Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig students participate fully in student life at Algoma U.

This close collaboration reflects the historic roots of our campus, which was first created as a direct result of Chief Shingwauk’s efforts to secure educational opportunities for his people in the 19th century. Shingwauk Indian Residential School existed for 96 years, and the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association continues to meet and to work with Algoma University to transform the negative legacy of the residential school into a positive legacy for current and future Anishinaabe students. The Shingwauk Education Trust is a provincial Trust formed to continue Chief Shingwauk’s work of bringing education and associated endeavours to this region.

Athabasca University, Canada’s Open University, is dedicated to the removal of barriers that restrict access to and success in university-level study and to increasing equality of educational opportunity for adult learners worldwide. Athabasca University provides learning for life. Through the achievements of its students, faculty and staff, AU stands out as a provider of high quality post-secondary education.

History

Athabasca University was established by Order in Council of the Government of Alberta on June 25, 1970. Originally conceived as a traditional campus-based institution, AU changed course in 1972 through a pilot project to test the concept of an open, distance university. The first AU course, World Ecology, was offered in 1973, and AU’s first Convocation, for two graduates, was held in 1977. The university achieved self-governing status as Alberta’s fourth public university on April 12, 1978.

By 1984, AU had outgrown its original facilities in Edmonton and, in accordance with the policy of decentralization favoured by the provincial government of the day, the university moved 145 kilometres north to the Town of Athabasca. Satellite campuses were established in Calgary, Edmonton and Fort McMurray, Alberta, to enable students to receive first-hand educational support services and to write invigilated examinations. The Fort McMurray location closed in 2000.

During the 1980s, in keeping with its mandate to explore new ways of delivering post-secondary education to students anywhere, any time, AU pioneered the use of computers to deliver online courses. AU’s Executive MBA program, the world’s first online EMBA, was introduced by AU’s Centre for Innovative Management in 1994.

Today, AU is one of the world’s foremost and fastest growing online and distance education institutions, serving over 37,000 students worldwide.

The University

AU serves over 37,000 students (over 7,300 full-load equivalents).

AU offers over 700 AU is committed to excellence in research and scholarship. Through the discovery, dissemination and transfer of new knowledge and the engagement of students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, the university integrates research with creative teaching, thereby informing the curriculum and providing opportunities for highly qualified graduates to promote innovation and to participate more fully in society.

Mission critical research in the scholarship of teaching and learning in open and distance environments is the primary focus of AU’s research activity; however, the university also actively supports and maintains high standards in discipline-based research. As a university with a growing graduate student population, now over 3,000 strong, AU ensures that the research and publication records of academic staff members are comparable to those of staff at other public universities in Canada.

AU is home to the Studies at many universities and colleges have clearly shown that students who live in residence receive a tremendous advantage over those who live in off-campus apartments or basement suites. A student’s education is enhanced by living in residence. Residence students have greater social confidence, establish more relationships with senior students, faculty and staff, tend to complete their education, get better marks, and become more actively involved with social and educational extra-curricular activities. To assist BU residence students with their academic needs, an Academic Residence Assistant (ARA) is employed by the Residence Office.

In order to address the unique needs of students, Student Services assists students in their intellectual, vocational, personal and social development.Various services such as counselling and learning skills are made available to students requiring assistance.

The Academic Skills Centre offers a broad range of academic support services to assist students. The Centre’s primary goal is to help students become more efficient learners, equipped with greater confidence, motivation and skill. style="text-align: left;">Brescia is Canada’s women’s university. We were founded in 1919 by the Ursuline Sisters, strong women of faith who are committed to social justice, community service, and the development of women. While our roots are in the Catholic faith, we are open to – and embrace – women of all faiths. Brescia is affiliated with The University of Western Ontario, the third-largest university in the province. That means you’ll benefit from the small, supportive atmosphere at Brescia while still enjoying the resources Western has to offer.

In addition to Brescia, you may take classes with men and women at Western’s main campus, Huron, and King’s University Colleges. When you graduate, your degree will be granted by Western.

History

Brescia University College was founded in 1919 by the Ursuline Religious of the Diocese of London. The Ursuline Sisters are strong women of faith who are committed to social justice, community service, and the development of women. Their vision and values continue to help shape the policies and procedures at Canada’s women’s university.

Originally, Brescia was located in a converted house downtown near Victoria Park. Seven young women comprised the first class of students. Land was later purchased and, in 1923, construction began on what is now Brescia University College. Classes began on the new campus in fall 1925.

Since its inception, diversity has been important to Brescia. In the early days, women came from the Caribbean, Latin America, and Asia to study at Brescia. Today, Brescia welcomes and embraces women of all faiths from all over the world.

The Ursulines ensured that all women, regardless of financial circumstances, could pursue a Brescia education. To this day, Brescia is known for our outstanding scholarship program.

Our Faculty

With Brescia’s 14-to-1 student-faculty ratio, you’ll easily interact with your exceptional professors — women and men who are committed to helping you get where you want to go in life. Experts who place teaching you above all of their personal endeavors. They’ll be there to guide, mentor, and challenge you. And they’ll empower you to:

Apply what you’ve learned in the classroom to the real world

Get involved — on campus and in the community

Live up to your potential

Make wise decisions

Participate in internships and international exchanges

Think critically.

Residence

To immerse yourself in all things Brescia, you’ll want to apply for residence. You’ll be living in the majestic, castle-like Ursuline Hall, along with about 170 women from all over Canada and the world. By living in residence, you’ll develop friendships that will last a lifetime.

Castle Café is located in residence as well so you won’t have far to go for meals or a snack. And your classes — and the library — will be right next door at Mother St. James Memorial Building.

Through Focused Interest Floors, you’ll get to know other women who share your passion for interests such as singing, dancing, and writing to languages, foods, and traditions. And you can develop your leadership skills by getting involved in Residence Council or by becoming one of our Residence Assistants.

You’ll experience such social programs as:

Floor dinners

Game nights

Movie nights

Service-learning trips

Trading lounges.

Centres and Outreach

Brescia has many long-standing community partnerships and we are committed to community action focused on building and maintaining relationships, including academic/community initiatives, fundraising, and community events.

Imagine a special place that helps you grow “both sides of the brain”. Brock University is that place. Part of what sets us apart from the rest is our philosophy of taking students beyond the pursuit of academic excellence. Brock is a place where left-brain and right-brain thinking come together, where students develop rational/analytical thinking in concert with their emotional/creative sides. We view community involvement as crucial to developing intelligent, well-rounded members of society.

That may help explain our popularity. For a decade, Brock has had the second-highest growth of students of any Ontario university.

It also doesn’t hurt that we have a park-like setting atop the Niagara Escarpment in Ontario’s Niagara peninsula. (Brock is the only Canadian university that is part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve).

Or that Brock graduates have one of the highest employment rates of all Ontario universities — 97.5 per cent.

Brock also gets top marks for our culture, our approach to learning and the array of programs across seven Faculties. When students gave their ratings to the Globe and Mail 2009 Canadian University Report, Brock was one of Canada’s top medium-size institutions in terms of quality of education, quality of teaching and most satisfied students.

With 17,000 full-time students and nearly 600 faculty, we’re small enough to be intimate, big enough to be world-class and in demand among international students.

Our rigorous undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs include experiential learning opportunities and one of Canada’s largest co-op programs. Our cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary programs offer multi-faceted degrees that enhance the career prospects of students.

Brock provides opportunities for social and academic growth that don’t exist at larger universities. Like access to professors. Our emphasis on moderate class sizes in seminar settings makes more students full participants in the learning experience.

History

Opened in 1964, Brock University is named for Maj.-General Sir Isaac Brock, who died at nearby Queenston Heights in the War of 1812. His last words — “Surgite! Push on!” — have become the University’s motto.

But the seeds of the University were sown long before the doors first opened. Brock’s story is about a community that rose up and built the institution it wanted for its future.

In the late 1950s, there was growing public discussion about how Niagara should have its own university. Its founders wanted young people to get a good education without having to leave the area.

The grassroots sentiment became a movement when, in November 1957, the Allanburg Women’s Institute asked the Ontario government to “favourably consider the placing of a university in the Niagara Peninsula.”

Momentum spread. By fall 1962, the Brock Founders Committee was incorporated. They received approval to create a new university, then developed an administrative and academic plan. Then they began raising money.

After years of meetings and fundraising, Brock opened in September 1964. It had 127 students in a refurbished refrigeration factory at the foot of the Niagara Escarpment in St. Catharines. In 1966 the landmark Brock Tower was completed, and faculties began moving “up the hill” to the University’s permanent home atop the escarpment.

Residence Life

The residence system at Brock University accommodates almost 2,400 students in six residence residence buildings or complexes. Approximately two-thirds of the beds in the residence system are in single rooms; the remainder are in double rooms. (There are no triple or quadruple occupancy rooms.) About half the beds are in traditional style residences and the other half are in townhouses. There are four traditional style residences: DeCew, Vallee, Earp and Lowenberger. There are two townhouse style residences: Village and Quarry View. Each residence has its own distinct characteristics; however, there are many similarities amongst all residence facilities.

Besides the friendly faces in the Department of Residences, there are some fantastic opportunities to get involved in residence life. Throughout the year there are many activities and events to participate in as well as the opportunity to participate in educational programming. Brock also has a strong commitment to student services, ensuring that our students have the highest quality experience both in and out of the classroom.

Our residences are a community — a community based on respect. The success of our community relies on the thoughtful consideration residents demonstrate for their roommates, suitemates and/or neighbours.

Remember – you have the rest of your life to live off campus. Take advantage of all the opportunities of residence living while you have the chance!

Recreation Services

From swim lessons to yoga, fitness to first aid, intramural underwater hockey to ballroom dancing, the Department of Recreation Services offers a wide range of recreational programs for Brock University students, staff, faculty and people from the community. Memberships to the Walker Complex are available to community members, or you can register for a specific program.

The Department of Recreation Services operates the facilities in the Walker Complex, including three gymnasia, the recreational 200m track, squash courts, the Zone fitness centre, the Eleanor Misener Aquatic Centre (50m pool) and the Leo LeBlanc Rowing Centre. Outside, are four tennis courts and seven playing fields. Recreation Services offers programs in aquatics, intramurals, fitness, dance and much more.

Memberships to the various facilities are available to Brock students, staff, faculty and community members.

Non-credit instructional programs offered to Brock students, staff, faculty and the community include aquatics, fitness, dance, coaching, wellness, first aid, pilates, children’s gym programs and much more.

Intramural sport programs for Brock University students include more than 60 leagues and involve more than 6,100 participants.

Athletics

In any community, sport is an integral part of understanding human potential and the concepts of collaboration and leadership. It’s also a great way to develop interests and skills outside of the classroom and in so doing acquire a well-rounded education.

The Brock Badgers are the athletics teams that represent Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario. To date the Badgers have won 27 National Championships and 48 Ontario Championships, and are members of the OUA, CIS, CUFLA and CURC.
They have varsity teams in Rugby, Baseball, Basketball, Wrestling, Rowing, Cross-Country, Curling, Fencing, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Soccer, Squash, Swimming, Volleyball.

Centre for the Arts

For 40 years, the Centre for the Arts has fulfilled our artistic mission to showcase Canadian and internationally acclaimed and emerging artists while emphasizing diversity, quality, and quantity.

Campion College

All Universities

Saskatchewan Universities
<guid

It is a liberal arts institution offering students the best of both worlds—access to the innovative programs and services of a larger university campus with all the advantages a small university college has to offer.

Rooted in the Catholic and Jesuit tradition of education, Campion College provides a university experience characterized by a strong sense of community and ongoing commitment to a personal approach to higher education. Through a grounding in the studies of Arts, Fine Arts, Sciences, students are challenged to develop leadership, as well as critical and analytical thinking skills which can be applied not just to a particular career, but also to a way of life.

Approximately 1,000 students studying in the faculties of Arts, Science, and Fine Arts at the University of Regina are enrolled through Campion College. Our graduates join the swelling ranks of distinguished Campion College and University of Regina alumni who continue to make impressive contributions to the local, provincial, national, and world communities.

The college is located is located on the U of R’s main campus, which is set in one of the largest urban parks in North America. The 2,300-hectare Wascana Centre houses the Provincial Legislature along with centers for education, cultural arts and recreation.

History

Founded in 1917, Campion College is named for the Jesuit priest and scholar, St. Edmund Campion. The college was founded through a special Act of the Legislature of the Province of Saskatchewan as the “Catholic College of Regina.”

In 1923, Campion attained status as a Junior College of the University of Saskatchewan, and was the first institution in Regina through which students could earn a bachelor’s degree.

In 1964, the College was granted federation with the University of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus, later to become the University of Regina.

Student Residences

Living on-campus is not only convenient, but also a great way to get the most of your university experience. The U of R has four residences on campus with a variety of options to choose from: apartment or dorm style, kitchen or meal plan, shared or private accommodations.

Click here for more information on your residence option on campus.

Alpha Sigma Nu

Alpha Sigma Nu is the International Honour Society for Jesuit institutions of Higher Learning. The Society inducts as members students, alumni and associates of Jesuit institutions who distinguish themselves by their Scholarship and leadership in Loyalty and Service to the institutions and the community.

Now in its 76th year since its founding at Marquette University, ASN’s member institutions include all 28 Jesuit Colleges and Universities in the USA, Sogang University in Seoul, South Korea; Campion College; and the three Jesuit schools of theology in Berkeley, California; Boston, Massachusetts; and Toronto.

The Campion College chapter was founded in 2006. Its most recent collaboration with Campion’s peer Campus Ministers and CSSU was a lunch of Afghan and Ethiopian foods to raise awareness of the situations of refugees in Regina and the world at large. Funds raised at the lunch went to support the work of Regina’s Open Door refugee organization.

To be invited to apply for membership in the Campion College chapter of ASN, the students must place in the top 15% of their class and must have taken at least one course in religious studies or philosophy. On the basis of their credentials and an essay by which they document their Scholarship, Loyalty and Service, applicants are selected for membership in numbers not exceeding 4% of their class. Members of ASN are the best of the best students at Campion College.

Campion College Students’ Union (CCSU)

The Campion College Students’ Union (CCSU) organizes various activities for students, including sporting and social events. The goal of the students’ union is to promote fellowship among students and to provide a friendly place to unwind from the rigour of academic pressures.

All Campion students are members of the CCSU. The core group of the CCSU is the executive, which invites interested students to offer their names for spring election or to act as support members. Regular meetings are held and all students are invited to attend.

Being part of the students’ union, and becoming active within it, provides students the opportunity to offer their specific talents to the CCSU. In return, they receive valuable experience and make many new friends.

Campus Ministry

Campus Ministry provides personal and spiritual counseling, a peer support network and centre, worship services, reflection and discussion groups, interfaith activities, volunteer placement, and a friendly and nurturing space for those who need spiritual and emotional comfort. Students involved in the Campion College Peer Ministry Program lead faith-sharing groups, organize lectures, arrange for special services, assist with Sunday liturgies, and help to coordinate volunteer efforts. Students do not have to be Roman Catholic to attend Campion College or to use the services of the Campus Ministry. The informative and spiritual setting allows students to question and formulate their own spiritual values.

Library

The library provides a comfortable studying space and houses a collection of approximately 50,000 volumes. Its books and periodicals are selected to provide material for courses offered by the College and with a view to complement the university library collection. Campion students have access to all the libraries on the University of Regina campus. Meanwhile, the College’s library staff are available to assist students using the online catalogue, the reference collection, online databases and CD-ROM, internet and E-mail services. Printing of documents and photocopying services are also available.

Canadian Mennonite University

All Universities

Manitoba Universities
<guid

As a Christian university, we do this within a framework of faith in God, and with the conviction that faith makes a difference in how we understand our world.

CMU was chartered by the Province of Manitoba in 1998. Its first classes were held in 2000-01. It is a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada.

CMU is officially supported by Mennonite Church Canada and the Mennonite Brethren Church of Manitoba.

History

Canadian Mennonite University is the result of the amalgamation of three colleges: Mennonite Brethren Bible College/Concord College (est. 1944); Canadian Mennonite Bible College (est. 1947); and Menno Simons College (est. 1989).

The origins of CMU go back to the early 1990s when people from the business community and from four Mennonite colleges in Manitoba—CMBC, Concord College, Steinbach Bible College and Menno Simons College—met to talk about inter-Mennonite co-operation in higher education. This led to formal discussions among the colleges, beginning in 1995. Steinbach Bible College withdrew from the process in 1996.

In August, 1998, the government of Manitoba proclaimed the charter for the creation of a university-level, degree-granting federation of Mennonite colleges. On November 18, 1998, the three colleges signed a Memorandum of Agreement, signifying final approval for the creation of the federation. On May 4th, 1999, the agreement to purchase 500 Shaftesbury was concluded. The Mennonite College Federation began offering its new, jointly sponsored academic programs in September, 1999. By September, 2000, CMBC and Concord College located together on a common campus at 500/600 Shaftesbury Boulevard. (Menno Simons College remained in downtown Winnipeg as CMU’s campus at the University of Winnipeg.) In October, 2008, CMU became a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada.

Residential Life

Many CMU students choose to live in residence, recognizing that the learning that happens from living together can be an important part of the educational experience. The residential community is a place to develop healthy relationships, find support when the way is difficult, and hold each other accountable for the choices that are made. Consider the opportunity to live on campus and be part of the thriving CMU community. There are three options on CMU’s main campus with a variety of different styles of accommodations.

Student Life

Spiritual life—following Christ in daily life and growing more deeply as believers—is important at CMU. We encourage this in a variety of formal and informal ways at the university. The formal ways include chapel, fellowship groups, prayer times and through spiritual direction.

<a

The athletics program is committed to helping you develop excellence within the context of highly competitive intercollegiate sports, while at the same time helping you to balance yourself spiritually, physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. The CMU Blazers have an established history of success in the Manitoba Colleges Athletics Conference.

Want to see and learn more about Canadian Mennonite University? Take a <a
