style="text-align:">Established in 1925, and based in Vancouver, BC, Emily Carr University of Art + Design is one of Canada’s premier post-secondary universities specializing in undergraduate and graduate art, design and media education. It is located on Granville Island in the centre of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. In the 1970s Granville Island was converted from an industrial site with shipyards and metalworking shops into a colorful complex of studios, galleries, theatres, shops, and public markets. Emily Carr sits in the middle of these stimulating surroundings. The facilities at Emily Carr make use of the spacious corrugated steel and timber structures of the industrial era by adding vaulted foyer galleries, sky lit studios and vast technical workshops and computer labs. In 1994, the Institute opened a spacious 60,000 square foot addition that houses integrated media, painting and design, as well as the library.

Recently Emily Carr has constructed a five-million dollar, state of the art Intersections Digital Studio (IDS). IDS provides a substantial expansion to ECU’s research and experimental capabilities. A modular building design with projectors, displays and sound equipment, IDS makes possible a flexible environment where students and professionals with specialized knowledge in art, design and technology can collaborate in an interdisciplinary manner. IDS is of significant value to students in the Master of Applied Arts degree and will be opening up new research opportunities for faculty and staff.

At Emily Carr, students from around the world are challenged to explore innovative impulses and take risks with creative skills. The faculty at Emily Carr are working artists and designers who encourage experimentation with every artistic medium, from sculpture and photography to multimedia and industrial design. Emily Carr recognizes that communication these days relies more heavily on visual elements. This shift to visual communication offers many career opportunities for graduates. Earning a degree at Emily Carr involves more than just learning a body of knowledge. Graduates leave the University with critical thinking skills and professional values that they will use in life and in the pursuit of new knowledge throughout their careers.

History

Emily Carr University received a degree-granting authority in 1989 through the Open Learning Agency, and in 1994 was granted authority to offer degrees in our own name: Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Arts, General Fine Arts, or Photography; and, Bachelor of Design in Communication Design or Industrial Design. In 1997 we were granted authority to offer Bachelor of Media Arts degrees. In 2006, Emily Carr Institute’s Masters of Applied Arts received its first cohort of students.

In May of 2008, Emily Carr was granted university status and is now Emily Carr University of Art + Design.

Emily Carr University of Art + Design is one of the oldest post-secondary institutions in British Columbia and the only one that is dedicated solely to professional education and learning in the arts, media and design. One of the University’s roles is to act as an advocate for the arts and reinforce the need for public support. At every opportunity, the University promotes public understanding and appreciation of fine arts, media arts, and design for their significant impact on the well-being of our society.

Over the last 83 years, the University has had an enormous influence on the development and growth of the arts, media, and design in Canada and internationally. Our alumni and faculty are among the most influential and important artists working in their respective fields. Our students go on to careers in a variety of fields, and are regularly accepted into graduate studies in all of the major universities and art institutions in the world.

Academics

Our four-year Undergraduate Degrees in art and design merge critical theory with studio practice.

Our Master of Applied Arts degree is a two-year professional program that prepares students to engage in the expanding fields of design, media and visual arts within the cultural and creative industries.

Emily Carr is dedicated to fostering an educational environment that is professional, practice-oriented and at the same time rooted in history and critical theory. We encourage students to develop new and innovative ways of thinking and creating. Our curriculum is flexible, personal, multidisciplinary and based on the learning needs of students. Students have the opportunity to apply for co-op credits, internships and an exchange program that currently features membership with 75 art and design schools in Canada, the US, Mexico, and Europe. Our faculty are working artists and designers who encourage experimentation within every artistic medium, from sculpture and photography to multimedia and industrial design. Our facilities and resources support student learning and academic programs.

Emily Carr provides an intimate learning environment with a diverse faculty and student body. We welcome students from around the globe, and in recent years, have hosted international students from over 50 countries.

Earning a degree at Emily Carr involves more than just learning a body of knowledge. style="text-align:">The Education Quality Assurance (EQA) designation is British Columbia’s – and Canada’s – first education brand or seal of quality. The EQA trademark will be used around the world to promote high-quality, reputable B.C. post-secondary institutions. It will be a standard trademark recognizable worldwide, and will reduce confusion caused by various quality assurance processes.

The EQA is a voluntary designation available to public and private post-secondary institutions that wish to apply. Eligibility is based on an institution having met government-recognized quality assurance standards, and on being in good standing with both the Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development and the applicable quality assurance bodies.

The Royal Roads University campus is known as an evolved cultural landscape – that is, a place that combines the work of nature with the work of humankind.

As the stewards of a national historic site, the university has worked to carefully preserve and restore heritage elements of the campus. Now the time has come for the university to add to the legacy of previous occupants of this site with the construction of two new buildings:

Hatley Park is considered one of the finest examples of an intact Edwardian estate and was designated a National Historic Site in 1995. It is strategically positioned to play a leading role in experiential tourism — one of the fastest growing industries worldwide.

Situated near the Pacific Ocean at the southern tip of Vancouver Island, the 565-acre property reflects the richness and diversity of British Columbia. At the heart of the property is the famous Hatley Castle, a 40-room mansion built in 1908 by James Dunsmuir, a coal baron and the former Premier and Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. The Dunsmuir family eventually sold the estate to the Government of Canada, who from 1940 to 1995 used the facility as a military training college. In 1995 the estate was leased to the Government of British Columbia to become the campus for Royal Roads University – Canada’s only university to provide applied and professional programs exclusively for people who wish to advance in the workplace.

The property is surrounded by meticulously preserved, old growth forest. Nature trails welcome walkers, hikers and geocache enthusiasts from around the world. Themed gardens are cultivated year round and the lagoon is a thriving bird sanctuary. Tours, workshops, festivals and special events are designed to enhance understanding of the importance of protecting and sharing our natural and cultural heritage so it may be preserved and enjoyed for future generations.

Simon Fraser University (Burnaby Campus)

All Universities

British Columbia Universities

TRU is a unique combination of traditional degree programs, many allowing diploma and certificate program graduates access through laddering, along with flexible degree completion through distance education as the BC Centre for Open Learning. TRU is a Different Kind of University offering over 70 certificate and diplomas plus undergraduate and master degrees. You’ll learn in classrooms, labs, the field and in the community. At TRU certificate credentials transfer into diplomas, which can be applied to bachelor’s degrees. We call it ‘laddering’. By combining the flexibility of laddering with the 400 courses available through distance and Open Learning, you really can have post-secondary education your way at Thompson Rivers University.

TRU is located right in the heart of Kamloops, a city of over 80,000, at the centre of the southern Interior of BC. Shopping, housing, entertainment and even the province’s largest municipal park are just a couple of blocks away. Whether you live on campus or ride a city bus with your U-Pass, everything you want and need as a student is right here.

Superb summers, four dramatic seasons, sports and outdoor recreation, and a diversity of cultural activity that few small cities can match are among the attractions of Kamloops.

History

What began in 1970 as a community college to deliver career-technical and two-year academic university transfer programs during the provinces’ initial expansion of post-secondary education, Thompson Rivers University is now British Columbia’s newest university.

The logo of Thompson Rivers University is a combined shield and logotype, with strict rules on how they are to appear together. The shield is composed of a sunrise/sunset that’s representative of the Kamloops region, where we average over 2,000 hours of sunshine annually, and of the rising sun of enlightenment traditionally associated with higher education. The mountains in the shield are indicative of the terrain of the region, strategically located between the Coast and Rocky Mountain ranges. The lines flowing from the mountains symbolize the rivers of our region, the North and South Thompson that merge into one, Thompson River. It’s also a reference to the joining of the two institutions, UCC and BC Open Learning that are now Thompson Rivers University. The colours, sage green and royal blue, reflect both the natural terrain of the area and the new boldness indicative of this institution.

Student Housing

Throughout the school year, TRU Recreation plans, organizes, and implements a variety of fun-filled activities for both the staff and students of TRU. This year is going to be exciting, as a number of new and thrilling activities have been incorporated into the Recreation/Intramural Programs.

Getting involved in Recreational Activities and Intramural Sports is a great way to make your school year memorable! By participating in these events, you will have fun, meet new friends, and face new challenges! Intramural sports currently at TRU include volleyball, basketball, soccer, and floor hockey.

Drop by the gymnasium for more information, or to pick up registration forms. All individual/ team registrations and fees must be submitted PRIOR to participating in any of the Recreation and/or Intramural events. The fees and registration forms may be dropped off at the concession in the TRU gymnasium or dropped in the Intramural registration box located in the gymnasium.

The X-Campus Radio

CFBX is a campus-based community station, and as such, it generally adheres to the policies, ideas and ideals of other campus stations, coast to coast. To make a long story short, CFBX is an alternative radio station that specializes in local programming and offers music and spoken-word shows that are normally not heard on private stations. We offer programming that ranges from classical to industrial, with plenty of international and unique shows added to the mix. We cater to an audience and to groups presently not served by commercial radio. We avoid the mainstream at all cost, and even our diverse rock programming will stay away from the hits and familiar acts. We strive to be informative and entertaining, but “weird and wonderful” is as applicable to our sound as anything else you can think of.

Student Clubs

Every year the Thompson Rivers University Students’ Union helps hundreds of students join, create, and organize the dozens of clubs that exist on campus. Recognized clubs at TRU are supported by the Thompson Rivers University Students’ Union through access to meeting room facilities, photocopying services, and event funding. Clubs organize great student activities, promote student success, and help students connect with other students in their area of interest. Joining or forming a club also allows students to gain experience by organizing campus events, participating in on- and off-campus activities, and making valuable contacts in their field of study or area of interest.

Joining or forming a club through the Students’ Union is easy. An updated list of active clubs with contact information is available below or at the TRUSU front desk. Students interested in joining a club can get a hold of the club’s contact and are encouraged to participate in club meetings and events. As well, if you are interested in forming a club, packages are available from the TRUSU front desk. Please be advised that all clubs wishing to access TRUSU Grants funding, book meeting room facilities, and/or use photocopying services are required to adhere to the Clubs Policy, which is included in the clubs package. For more information please stop by the TRUSU front desk.

Clubs promote campus life by organizing exciting activities, engaging students in their area of interest, and provide a place for like-minded individuals to meet and share ideas. Since its foundation, TRUSU has worked to ensure that clubs have all the resources they need to function effectively. Every year, students get excited to see what new clubs are formed on campus – so have fun and be sure that this year you join or start a club!
<p
