But Mount Allison has more claims to fame than beauty alone. It offers five degrees to undergraduate students — Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Commerce, and Bachelor of Music, as well as some postgraduate degrees in science. Mount Allison encourages personalized combinations of courses and offers a very strong academic and extracurricular experience, one that we fondly refer to as Mount A plus.

Founded in 1839 by Charles Frederick Allison, Mount Allison has a rich history but has always kept an eye squarely on the future. Mount Allison was one of the first universities in the country to introduce a completely wireless campus and has had a lot of other “firsts” as well.

Mount Allison was the first university in the British Empire to confer a bachelor’s degree to a woman, Grace Annie Lockhart, who earned a Bachelor of Science in 1875. It was also the first university to grant a Bachelor of Arts degree to a woman — Harriet Starr Stewart. Mary Electa Adams (1823-1898), who taught at Mount Allison, paved the way for women’s access to Canadian universities.

Mount Allison has the oldest university art gallery in Canada — the Owens Art Gallery, which opened in 1895 and has a permanent collection of more than 3,000 works, including paintings and sketches by the Group of Seven. Noted Canadian artists such as Alex Colville, Christopher Pratt, Mary Pratt, John Hammond, Lawren P. Harris, Tom Forrestall, and Ted Pulford, whose works are also featured in the gallery and around campus, are all former Mount A faculty members and/or alumni.

Arts and Culture

The Owens Art Gallery is the oldest university art gallery in Canada, opened to the public in 1895. Our objectives are to provide a wide range of professional visual arts programming to Mount Allison University’s students, staff and alumni, and to serve as a significant, integral component of a liberal arts education. At the same time the Gallery is actively integrated into the wider cultural landscape locally, nationally and internationally.

The Owens is a place where you will encounter lively, innovative artwork, discover your own history, meet artists, engage with your community, and have fun.

The Windsor Theatre is a flexible black-box studio production space that serves as the primary laboratory facility for the Drama Studies Programme at Mount Allison University. As such, it is the centre of informed, guided, process-driven theatre production on the campus. The facility is dedicated to learning and teaching about all aspects of drama and theatre through an approach that features creative problem solving in a structured, safe, and well-equipped environment.

Participation in Drama Studies productions and events in the Windsor Theatre is open to all members of the Mount Allison community, whether or not they are studying Drama formally, providing a unique opportunity for development of theatre skills in an environment energized and informed by the work of students Majoring or Minoring in Drama Studies.

The Mount Allison Performing Arts Series offers both variety and exceptional quality as we bring you some of Canada’s most celebrated performers in the areas of classical music, dance, folk, world music, and jazz.

Athletics and Recreation

The intramural program consists of various sporting activities in which teams or individuals participate according to interest and ability level. There are both structured leagues and one-day events or tournaments. These activities are open to currently enrolled students at Mount Allison. For each sport, students may only play on one team list.

Programs are divided into 3 divisions:

Men: 2 leagues – Gold (most competitive) and Garnet (less competitive)

Women

Coed.

Most of the league sports have teams who register from within their intramural unit. Each residence is its own intramural unit, although, depending on the size of the residence there may be instances where one residence may combine with another for particular activities. Town students also comprise a unit and have the same privileges as a residence unit.

The residence units are (both men and women): Windsor, Bennett, Bigelow, Edwards, Harper, Thornton, Hunton and Campbell.

Mount Allison invites you to come and join the fun – make it part of your university experience!! Intramurals provide a relief from the stress and strain of daily academic commitments, the opportunity to develop or maintain personal fitness and well-being, as well as the chance to meet new friends.

Mount Allison supports a variety of competitive club sport programs. Normally these programs are generated by student interest. The structure involves student leadership and, if merited, assistance is provided by the Department of Physical Recreation and Athletics.

Some of the active sport club programs on campus are men’s rugby, women’s rugby, cross country, golf, lacrosse, men’s volleyball, frisbee, men’s ice hockey, figure skating, and precision skating. The majority of these programs have had competitive opportunities against colleges, universities, and senior teams in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

Research and Creative Activity

Faculty and student researchers are engaged in exploration and creation in a wide variety of disciplines. For more information about research at Mount Allison, please see our Established nearly a century ago, St. Thomas is the ideal liberal arts institution, consistently ranked as one of the top undergraduate universities in Canada. Teaching is the highest institutional priority, and professors are directly engaged in challenging programmes that foster each student’s intellectual development.

The cornerstone four-year Bachelor of Arts programme has more than 30 academic disciplines. Students explore various disciplines during their first two years of study, allowing them to broaden their interests before selecting an honours program or major. Small class sizes (no class is larger than 60, with an average class size of 30) encourage students to participate in discussions with peers and professors.

St. Thomas University is unique in Canada: our sole focus is liberal arts education. We think it is the best way to prepare you for a life as a leader, thinker, and global citizen. Liberal arts education gives you the ability to find solutions to problems, make independent decisions, and act on them. It teaches you how to argue logically, write clearly, and master new ways of thinking. It means gaining skills in communication, critical thinking and open-mindedness.

At St. Thomas, you can expect small classes, engaged classmates, and teachers second-to-none. Choose from among more than 30 academic disciplines: from traditional fields like Philosophy, History and Languages, to innovative programmes in Journalism, Human Rights, Criminology, Environment and Society, and Native Studies.

Wherever you want to go, St. Thomas will help you get there.

You’ll develop your interests, discover your passions, learn the skills and subjects you need, and see a different point of view. It all starts with the freedom to think for yourself.

History

The origin of St. Thomas University dates back to 1910. At that time, the Most Reverend Thomas F. Barry, Bishop of Chatham, invited the Basilian Fathers of Toronto to assume charge of an institution in Chatham, New Brunswick, providing education for boys at the secondary and junior college levels. The institution was called St. Thomas College.

The Basilian Fathers remained at St. Thomas until 1923. That year the school was placed under the direction of the clergy of the Diocese of Chatham. In 1938, the Diocese of Chatham became the Diocese of Bathurst. In 1959, a section of Northumberland County, including within its territorial limits St. Thomas College, was transferred from the Diocese of Bathurst to the Diocese of Saint John.

Volunteerism, Service & Social Justice

St. Thomas’ students are devoted to justice and service, as the extraordinary number of student service organizations on campus goes to show. We don’t just learn about the world’s problems in class, we act to bring about change in our community.

Campus Diversity

We want you to feel at home at St. Thomas, no matter where you come from, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation. You’ll be able to find a student group on campus where you will feel supported, included, and empowered to share your experiences and culture with friends.

Campus Ministry

At St. Thomas, people of all faiths are welcomed and invited to participate fully in the community. If you are interested in becoming more involved in your faith, join our active Campus Ministry team or one of several other campus groups devoted to faith. Whatever your religious affiliation, feel free to spend some time in the beautiful St. Thomas chapel, or to get involved with the social justice initiatives of Campus Ministry.

Jobs on Campus

Short on cash? The JOBS programme provides a centralized listing of the many jobs available on campus, and the Career Counselling Centre at UNB is also available to St. Thomas students.

Symbols of Community

T-Pins and T-Rings are treasured reminders of membership in the STU family. On the eve of the first day of classes, all first-year students gather in the courtyard. Our president welcomes the new students to the academic world, presenting each with a T-Pin. Donning academic robes is a tradition that dates back centuries, and after four years at St. Thomas, our students join the tradition, becoming graduates and donning their own black gowns and hood. On the Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas, the patron saint of all Catholic universities and students, fourth-year students earn the coveted T-Ring – a nationally recognized symbol that unites our graduates as they go their separate ways.

Home of the Tommies

Sports fans and athletes alike come together to cheer on the Tommies-men’s and women’s hockey, soccer, volleyball, rugby and basketball teams – as they battle for pride of place in league play. Join the epic Battle of the Hill, when the Tommies play against our nearest rival, UNB. If you’re not a player, cheer your team to victory!

The St. Thomas men’s and women’s ice hockey teams compete in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) and the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). Basketball (M&W), soccer (M&W), and volleyball (M&W) compete in the Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association (ACAA) and the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA). Rugby (M&W) compete in the an organized club league.

Intramurals

If you want to play for fun, join an intramural league: St. Thomas partners with UNB for an intramural sports programme that attracts over 3,000 participants each year.

Fitness

The J. B. O’Keefe Fitness Centre is a 14,000 square foot state-of-the-art gymnasium. As a student, you will have free access to cardio and weight training equipment, basketball and squash courts, as well as to UNB’s facilities: three more gyms, a pool, tennis courts, and outdoor fields. Fitness classes offered at both UNB and St. Thomas will also be open to you.

Theatre

St. Thomas is home to the Black Box Theatre, an intimate playing space where Theatre St. Thomas (TST) performs both classics and experimental theatre. Auditions for roles onstage and off are open to all, and recent productions have included Schwartz’s Godspell, Stoppard’s Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead, and Auburn’s Proof.

Steeds

St. Thomas Early English Drama Society performs one show annually, focusing on early Drama. Past productions have included Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus and Aristophanes’ Lysistrata.

Music

St. Thomas is home to two instrumental ensembles: The Thomists big-band-style orchestra, and STU Jazz, featuring experimental jazz stylings and tight ensemble work. If voice is your instrument, check out the St. Thomas Singers, performing in a variety of styles.

Visual Arts

This year St. Thomas students launched their inaugural art exhibition, START, with great success. If you are a painter, sculptor, photographer, or visual artist of any description, watch out for your chance to showcase your work and share your craft with fellow artists.
<p

The university’s three campuses are located in New Brunswick’s francophone regions at Edmundston, Shippagan and Moncton.

Université de Moncton offers 160 study programs, including 45 at the master’s degree level and four at the doctorate level. Fields of study include administration, arts, education, engineering, forestry, law, nursing, nutrition, psychology, sciences, social work, etc. More than 35 research centers, chairs, and institutes have been established over the years.

The student population originates mainly from New Brunswick but also from almost all countries of the Francophonie internationale. The university benefits from many exchange programs and institutional agreements supporting student mobility at the international level. Numerous international internships are made available to students every year. Université de Moncton is one of the few francophone universities in Canada that offer international students the opportunity to work and study at the masters level.

Over 6,200 students are enrolled at Université de Moncton. They benefit from a personalized teaching style with quality that can only be provided in a medium-sized university. With one of the lowest faculty-student ratios in the country, exchanges between the professors and students and the overall quality of learning are enhanced.

The Edmundston campus of the University of Moncton is located in Madawaska County, in north-western New Brunswick. Its population is 34,071 inhabitants (2006) of which almost half live in the city of Edmundston (16,643 inhabitants in 2006 according to Statistics Canada). With 98% of its population having French as their mother tongue, Edmundston is the most French of the eight major cities of New Brunswick. The city of Edmundston is divided into four quarters (Edmundston, Saint-Basile Saint-Jacques and Verret).

Scholarships and Financial Aid

The Scholarships and Financial Aid site offers a wealth of information, whether on a <a
