Surrounded by the rich, natural beauty of Northern Ontario, Algoma U is an inclusive and diverse community of over 1200 students, offering more than 30 academic programs taught by internationally known experts in fields such as Business, Community Development, Economics, Biology, History, Psychology, and Computer Science.

Algoma University has more than 40 years experience in offering undergraduate liberal arts and science programs, and now offers an internationally recognized and respected Masters degree in the burgeoning field of computer games technology.

Algoma University professors are committed to nurturing the minds and talents of each and every student. Everything from research opportunities to student life to lectures and labs is planned around the University’s commitment to helping every student succeed and grow, both academically and as a person. Algoma University is a place where students can step into leadership roles, both on campus and in the community.

At Algoma U, every student will find a place to belong.

Administration

Algoma University is governed by two bodies: the Board of Governors and the University Senate.

The Board of Governors is comprised of between 12 and 30 individuals, and is responsible for the government, conduct, management, and control of the University and its property.

Our Faculty

When you come to Algoma University, you’ll discover what it’s like to have professors who take an active interest in you and your goals – professors who actually want to know who you are and what will help you succeed. The faculty members you encounter will encourage creativity, imagination, critical thinking and risk-taking. At Algoma U, our professors are academically accomplished, deeply committed to excellence in teaching, and fully focused on student success.

Research

As Algoma University seeks to fulfill its mission to offer an exceptional undergraduate education, research plays an increasingly important role. We recognize that all faculty research is a valuable component of that mission, and as we proudly grow in our new role as Ontario’s nineteenth autonomous university, we will distinguish ourselves through the people and issues of the region we serve. In particular, research at Algoma University will recognize the significant importance and contribution of the First Nations.

We recognize also that research opportunities provide students with the skills, techniques and cutting-edge knowledge that will enable them to become agents of positive change in their communities through knowledge transfer and cultural enrichment.

George Leach Centre

Opened in September 1992, the 39,000 square foot George Leach Centre (GLC) provides a wide range of facilities for athletics, fitness and recreation. Access to the GLC is available to students of Algoma University as well as the broader community.

The George Leach Centre is also the home of Algoma University’s varsity basketball teams and other intercity and intramural sports. Click here for more information about Athletics and Recreation at Algoma University.

Conference Facilities

Why not host your next conference at Algoma University? We’re located in the east end of beautiful Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, right next to the St. Mary’s River.

Shingwauk Hall, a historical landmark in the community, offers first-rate modern facilities making Algoma University the perfect meeting place for conferences of any size.

Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig

As part of Algoma University’s commitment to providing a respectful, inclusive and innovative educational environment for Anishinaabe (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) students, the University has entered into a Covenant with the Shingwauk Education Trust. The Covenant is a solemn document through which both parties pledge to work together for the furtherance of Anishinaabe education and research. The two partners are following the Two Row Wampum model of development – each partner respecting the other and supporting the other in the pursuit of their goals.

The Shingwauk Education Trust has established Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig, which offers courses and programs of particular interest to Anishinaabe students. These courses and programs are fully credited through Algoma University or other partner institutions. Algoma U students are welcome to take Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig courses, and Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig students participate fully in student life at Algoma U.

This close collaboration reflects the historic roots of our campus, which was first created as a direct result of Chief Shingwauk’s efforts to secure educational opportunities for his people in the 19th century. Shingwauk Indian Residential School existed for 96 years, and the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association continues to meet and to work with Algoma University to transform the negative legacy of the residential school into a positive legacy for current and future Anishinaabe students. The Shingwauk Education Trust is a provincial Trust formed to continue Chief Shingwauk’s work of bringing education and associated endeavours to this region.

Brescia is Canada’s women’s university. We were founded in 1919 by the Ursuline Sisters, strong women of faith who are committed to social justice, community service, and the development of women. While our roots are in the Catholic faith, we are open to – and embrace – women of all faiths. Brescia is affiliated with The University of Western Ontario, the third-largest university in the province. That means you’ll benefit from the small, supportive atmosphere at Brescia while still enjoying the resources Western has to offer.

In addition to Brescia, you may take classes with men and women at Western’s main campus, Huron, and King’s University Colleges. When you graduate, your degree will be granted by Western.

History

Brescia University College was founded in 1919 by the Ursuline Religious of the Diocese of London. The Ursuline Sisters are strong women of faith who are committed to social justice, community service, and the development of women. Their vision and values continue to help shape the policies and procedures at Canada’s women’s university.

Originally, Brescia was located in a converted house downtown near Victoria Park. Seven young women comprised the first class of students. Land was later purchased and, in 1923, construction began on what is now Brescia University College. Classes began on the new campus in fall 1925.

Since its inception, diversity has been important to Brescia. In the early days, women came from the Caribbean, Latin America, and Asia to study at Brescia. Today, Brescia welcomes and embraces women of all faiths from all over the world.

The Ursulines ensured that all women, regardless of financial circumstances, could pursue a Brescia education. To this day, Brescia is known for our outstanding scholarship program.

Our Faculty

With Brescia’s 14-to-1 student-faculty ratio, you’ll easily interact with your exceptional professors — women and men who are committed to helping you get where you want to go in life. Experts who place teaching you above all of their personal endeavors. They’ll be there to guide, mentor, and challenge you. And they’ll empower you to:

Apply what you’ve learned in the classroom to the real world

Get involved — on campus and in the community

Live up to your potential

Make wise decisions

Participate in internships and international exchanges

Think critically.

Residence

To immerse yourself in all things Brescia, you’ll want to apply for residence. You’ll be living in the majestic, castle-like Ursuline Hall, along with about 170 women from all over Canada and the world. By living in residence, you’ll develop friendships that will last a lifetime.

Castle Café is located in residence as well so you won’t have far to go for meals or a snack. And your classes — and the library — will be right next door at Mother St. James Memorial Building.

Through Focused Interest Floors, you’ll get to know other women who share your passion for interests such as singing, dancing, and writing to languages, foods, and traditions. And you can develop your leadership skills by getting involved in Residence Council or by becoming one of our Residence Assistants.

You’ll experience such social programs as:

Floor dinners

Game nights

Movie nights

Service-learning trips

Trading lounges.

Centres and Outreach

Brescia has many long-standing community partnerships and we are committed to community action focused on building and maintaining relationships, including academic/community initiatives, fundraising, and community events.

Brescia students, staff, and faculty represent the College within the London community through their activities, volunteer work, research, programming, and course-related initiatives. These activities enhance our creativity, enrich our communities, and nurture individual responsibility. Connection with a larger constituency expands our awareness and channels our compassion.

Brock University

All Universities

Ontario Universities

Imagine a special place that helps you grow “both sides of the brain”. Brock University is that place. Part of what sets us apart from the rest is our philosophy of taking students beyond the pursuit of academic excellence. Brock is a place where left-brain and right-brain thinking come together, where students develop rational/analytical thinking in concert with their emotional/creative sides. We view community involvement as crucial to developing intelligent, well-rounded members of society.

That may help explain our popularity. For a decade, Brock has had the second-highest growth of students of any Ontario university.

It also doesn’t hurt that we have a park-like setting atop the Niagara Escarpment in Ontario’s Niagara peninsula. (Brock is the only Canadian university that is part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve).

Or that Brock graduates have one of the highest employment rates of all Ontario universities — 97.5 per cent.

Brock also gets top marks for our culture, our approach to learning and the array of programs across seven Faculties. When students gave their ratings to the Globe and Mail 2009 Canadian University Report, Brock was one of Canada’s top medium-size institutions in terms of quality of education, quality of teaching and most satisfied students.

With 17,000 full-time students and nearly 600 faculty, we’re small enough to be intimate, big enough to be world-class and in demand among international students.

Our rigorous undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs include experiential learning opportunities and one of Canada’s largest co-op programs. Our cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary programs offer multi-faceted degrees that enhance the career prospects of students.

Brock provides opportunities for social and academic growth that don’t exist at larger universities. Like access to professors. Our emphasis on moderate class sizes in seminar settings makes more students full participants in the learning experience.

History

Opened in 1964, Brock University is named for Maj.-General Sir Isaac Brock, who died at nearby Queenston Heights in the War of 1812. His last words — “Surgite! Push on!” — have become the University’s motto.

But the seeds of the University were sown long before the doors first opened. Brock’s story is about a community that rose up and built the institution it wanted for its future.

In the late 1950s, there was growing public discussion about how Niagara should have its own university. Its founders wanted young people to get a good education without having to leave the area.

The grassroots sentiment became a movement when, in November 1957, the Allanburg Women’s Institute asked the Ontario government to “favourably consider the placing of a university in the Niagara Peninsula.”

Momentum spread. By fall 1962, the Brock Founders Committee was incorporated. They received approval to create a new university, then developed an administrative and academic plan. Then they began raising money.

After years of meetings and fundraising, Brock opened in September 1964. It had 127 students in a refurbished refrigeration factory at the foot of the Niagara Escarpment in St. Catharines. In 1966 the landmark Brock Tower was completed, and faculties began moving “up the hill” to the University’s permanent home atop the escarpment.

Residence Life

The residence system at Brock University accommodates almost 2,400 students in six residence residence buildings or complexes. Approximately two-thirds of the beds in the residence system are in single rooms; the remainder are in double rooms. (There are no triple or quadruple occupancy rooms.) About half the beds are in traditional style residences and the other half are in townhouses. There are four traditional style residences: DeCew, Vallee, Earp and Lowenberger. There are two townhouse style residences: Village and Quarry View. Each residence has its own distinct characteristics; however, there are many similarities amongst all residence facilities.

Besides the friendly faces in the Department of Residences, there are some fantastic opportunities to get involved in residence life. Throughout the year there are many activities and events to participate in as well as the opportunity to participate in educational programming. Brock also has a strong commitment to student services, ensuring that our students have the highest quality experience both in and out of the classroom.

Our residences are a community — a community based on respect. The success of our community relies on the thoughtful consideration residents demonstrate for their roommates, suitemates and/or neighbours.

Remember – you have the rest of your life to live off campus. Take advantage of all the opportunities of residence living while you have the chance!

Recreation Services

From swim lessons to yoga, fitness to first aid, intramural underwater hockey to ballroom dancing, the Department of Recreation Services offers a wide range of recreational programs for Brock University students, staff, faculty and people from the community. Memberships to the Walker Complex are available to community members, or you can register for a specific program.

The Department of Recreation Services operates the facilities in the Walker Complex, including three gymnasia, the recreational 200m track, squash courts, the Zone fitness centre, the Eleanor Misener Aquatic Centre (50m pool) and the Leo LeBlanc Rowing Centre. Outside, are four tennis courts and seven playing fields. Recreation Services offers programs in aquatics, intramurals, fitness, dance and much more.

Memberships to the various facilities are available to Brock students, staff, faculty and community members.

Non-credit instructional programs offered to Brock students, staff, faculty and the community include aquatics, fitness, dance, coaching, wellness, first aid, pilates, children’s gym programs and much more.

Intramural sport programs for Brock University students include more than 60 leagues and involve more than 6,100 participants.

Athletics

In any community, sport is an integral part of understanding human potential and the concepts of collaboration and leadership. It’s also a great way to develop interests and skills outside of the classroom and in so doing acquire a well-rounded education.

The Brock Badgers are the athletics teams that represent Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario. To date the Badgers have won 27 National Championships and 48 Ontario Championships, and are members of the OUA, CIS, CUFLA and CURC.
They have varsity teams in Rugby, Baseball, Basketball, Wrestling, Rowing, Cross-Country, Curling, Fencing, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Soccer, Squash, Swimming, Volleyball.

Centre for the Arts

For 40 years, the Centre for the Arts has fulfilled our artistic mission to showcase Canadian and internationally acclaimed and emerging artists while emphasizing diversity, quality, and quantity.

Carleton University

All Universities

Ontario Universities

Adult Recreational Leagues which are open to everyone. All leagues take place right here on campus in Carleton University’s multimillion dollar athletics and recreation facilities.

Continue to play a sport that you already enjoy or try something new. It’s a great place for you to get fit, meet new people and have some fun. With about 5,000 people participating in 9 sports and 15 different leagues last year, we really do have something for everyone. More leagues being added for the upcoming year. Carleton University Intramurals are bigger and better than ever!

Art and Culture

Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG) builds and preserves the University’s art collection as a rich resource for research, teaching, learning and discovery through the direct experience of original works of art. As a public art gallery, it connects the cultural life of the University to that of the wider community through a lively and critical program of exhibitions, publications, and events that foster awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the visual arts.

The Kailash Mital Theatre is Carleton University’s fully equipped 444 seat performance Theatre. Professionally equipped, managed and staffed, the Kailash Mital Theatre is suitable for Dramatic Productions, Acoustic and Amplified Concerts, and both Conferences and Meetings.

The Sock ‘n’ Buskin Theatre Company was founded in 1943, one year after Carleton University was formed. In its sixty-three year history, Sock ‘n’ Buskin has been a proving ground of sorts for both local and international theatre. Dan Aykroyd began his acting career with the Company in 1969. Alan Neal, host of CBC Radio One’s Ottawa Today, is a former Artistic Director of the company. Both Third Wall Theatre Company and the Great Canadian Theatre Company have their roots Sock ‘n’ Buskin, as do many other local companies. Traditionally, Sock ‘n’ Buskin mounts three shows per year at Carleton University’s Kailash Mital Theatre as part of its Main Stage season, although there have been four-show seasons in the past.

Dominican University College

All Universities

Ontario Universities

The Dominican University College is heir to a long tradition of teaching philosophy and theology that dates back to the 13th century. While remaining true to its origins, it positions itself at the forefront of philosophical and theological thought. What students find at the Dominican University College is an exceptional environment, committed teachers, personalized teaching and an ambiance that favours discussion and the exchange of ideas.

The college values intellectual rigour, offers excellent student supervision, and a vast culture of knowledge that allows in depth exploration of both philosophy and theology.

Students from all over the country and from abroad come to the College to live this unique study experience, which will allow them to progress in their career, but also to develop as individuals.

The College is located downtown, in a lively, multi-ethnic area, a few minutes from Parliament Hill and all services. It is close to the Transitway, a fast bus system that allows for moving around the city quickly. The Gatineau Park is 15 minutes away, with its lakes, lookouts and 200km of hiking and cross country trails.

History

In 1260, forty-five years after the foundation of the Dominican Order by Dominique de Guzman, the studium generale was established, a model for a university specialised in philosophy and theology that will last centuries.

In 1900, the Dominicans brought their school of theology to Ottawa, followed shortly by studies in philosophy in 1902. In 1967, a civil charter was granted by the Ontario Government, allowing the College to offer civil degrees in philosophy and theology.

Since then, the College has grown regularly, especially with the opening of English undergraduate programmes in philosophy in 1992 and in theology in 2003. The College offers English graduate degrees in philosophy since 1997, and will soon offer the same in theology.

Housing

The Dominican Community of Ottawa provides male students over a dozen rooms. For the 2009-2010 school year, the cost for room and board is $850 per month, for a total of $6800 for the 8 month school year period.

Conditions of admission into campus housing:

Full time Dominican University College student

Letter of recommendation

Initial payment of $900 (fully refundable if the admitted student does not register).

Research

The faculty of the Department of Philosophy at the Dominican University College (D.U.C) have diverse research and wide-ranging research interests in the history of philosophy, metaphysics and modern philosophy. The DUC, with its traditional origins in the House of Studies of the Friar Preachers of St. Dominic, is particularly well situated and established to promote advanced research studies in the history of philosophy. The medieval tradition, with its overarching synthesis in the philosophy and theology of St. Thomas Aquinas, requires a solid grounding in the ancient philosophies of Plato, Aristotle and the Neo-Platonists. The Department encourages and often conducts research in the original languages of the ancient authors. Faculty members are continually engaged in scholarly studies which demonstrate the relevance of ancient philosophy to understanding the modern world.

Equally, the classical traditions of early modern rationalism and empiricism provide important precedents for the understanding of modernity. Faculty members have engaged in the study of Descartes, Spinoza and Leibniz. The other great precedent for modernity is German Idealism, wherein the philosophies of Kant and Hegel provided the foundation for modern inquiries into epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, politics and jurisprudence. The College not only encourages the specialized study of individual philosophers in these traditions, but also promotes the articulation of significant connections between various philosophers and schools of thought. Speculative inquiry into the meaning of the philosophical tradition as a whole is a mode of reflection widely promoted by faculty members.

Student Association

The Students’ Association (AECDO) elects its representatives who sit on the boards of the Faculty of Philosophy and of the Faculty of Theology. It organizes and directs various activities (extracurricular, social justice committee, social gatherings…) pertaining to student life.

Soccer

Thanks to the Faculty of Philosophy, students have earned a right to practice soccer at a local sports center & gym. Help free your inner Beckham or Messi and come play with us! As a student at Huron, you’ll experience personal attention from faculty, a warm campus community and the pursuit of academic excellence. Because class sizes are small, our students enjoy lots of interaction with professors and classmates. In fact, over 90% of students said in a recent graduate survey that instructors took an active interest in their learning. Beyond the classroom, Huron opens the door to a world of international opportunities from exchanges and work/study programs to volunteering for development agencies.

Indeed, we prepare students for a world of possibilities and our alumni are proof. More than half of Huron students go on to graduate or professional schools across Canada or around the world. Others start careers or pursue international opportunities. All leave equipped with solid skills, a commitment to social responsibility and the potential for personal growth.

With just over 1,100 students, Huron is one of North America’s smallest universities. In fact, size is one of our biggest advantages. Students enjoy a welcoming campus community with small classes, an interactive learning environment and unparalelled opportunities to get involved in research. Faculty are focused on student success: In a recent graduate survey, over 90% of students say that instructors took an active interest in their learning.

History

Huron University College was incorporated on May 5, 1863, and is the founding college of The University of Western Ontario. Originally established as Huron College, Huron changed its name to Huron University College with Royal Assent in June 2000. To be part of Huron is to be part of one of the oldest university communities in Canada.

Founded by Bishop Benjamin Cronyn, Huron began as a theological college dedicated to its motto, True Religion and Sound Learning. Its original property, known as Rough Park, occupied the block bounded by Grosvenor, St. George and St. James Streets. Over the next 100 years, Huron would evolve from its theological roots into a dynamic liberal arts university institution and theological college with a tradition for excellence.

In 1951, Huron moved to its present location and has since seen major growth not only in its student enrollment, but also in its residence facilities, classrooms, library, and faculty offices. From its modest beginnings in 1956 with 45 full-time students, the Faculty of Arts and Social Science (originally known as the Faculty of Arts), now boasts a student enrollment of over 1000 full-time students. Our Faculty of Theology continues to attract students to its Master of Divinity and Master of Theological Studies programs. The two Faculties enroll a diverse student body of about 1100, with students from every province and some 20 different countries.

From the moment that first class of 13 students sat down with their teacher, Isaac Hellmuth (Huron’s first Principal), in the winter of 1863, Huron has been a people place, known for its small classes, individual attention from faculty, and commitment to academic excellence. Huron has grown to become one of Canada’s leading university institutions, one where students are encouraged to grow intellectually and personally in a supportive, involving and challenging community environment.

Student Housing

Huron University College guarantees residence to all first-year students who meet the deadline (May 28, 2009) for residence application and deposit. National Scholarship holders are awarded their preference for building and room. Applicants with an average of 90% or better at the time of admission are guaranteed a single room.

Student residences consist of four residence types:

House

Dormitory

Suite

Co-Ed

To view sample floor plans click here.

Athletics and Recreation

The University of Western Ontario offers a wide range of “recreation programs and services that inspire the diverse University community to live an active and healthy lifestyle” (Campus Recreation Mission, 2006). Students may choose from a variety of aquatics, fitness/wellness programs, intramural sports, club sports or take instruction in a new recreation.

Huron students gain free membership to utilise the UWO facilities, including squash courts, racquetball court, pool, fitness facilities (Cardio Annex), aerobics classes, gymnasia and weight room.

Construction is completed on UWO’s new $34 Million recreation facility which is linked to the existing Thompson Recreation and Athletic Centre. The building houses expanded facilities for student recreation activities and include:

five gymnasiums

three dance/multipurpose studios

50-metre swimming pool

expanded fitness and weight training facilities

recreational squash courts

locker rooms and

administrative offices.

Student Clubs and Activities

With just over 1,100 students, Huron is a great place to make a lifetime of friendships. Students get incredible support and encouragement from faculty and fellow students. There is a real sense of community at Huron. Along with an exciting social scene, more than 30 clubs and organizations offer opportunities to get involved. At Huron, we value rigorous learning and vigorous fun.

Huron University College Students’ Council (HUCSC) is an organization designed for you and run by students like you. With an annual budget of approximately $80,000, the HUCSC allows students to balance academics with the fun things (like events, parties, student clubs, and leadership opportunities). HUCSC strives to provide students with opportunities to get involved by either participating in or running various events, programs, or clubs. It also builds leaders who are able to contribute to the Huron community through interaction, volunteer work, and a great sense of adventure.

Some of the Huron student clubs include:

French Club

Huron Underground Dramatic Society

Huron Literary Society

Sandwich Club

SAMAJ Cultural Club

GLOBE

Golf Club

JAM (Just About Music)

History Club

Huron Heat (Dance Club)

Support Services

Huron students have access to many services developed to help them meet their academic goals. Many of these services are offered in a personal support setting with one-to-one counseling that may not be available at larger institutions.

Living in residence places you at the heart of campus life, close to classrooms, the library, health services, recreational and dining facilities. Residence is much more than a bed and a desk. Our professional and student staff make it their top priority to create living space which supports your needs both in and out of the classroom. Residence Living also provides students with opportunities for personal growth and involvement. At King’s students are encouraged to take an active role in their residence through participation in various activities which include student government, student employment, residence oriented programs, community and athletic events. Research indicates that students who live in residence are less likely to drop out and are highly satisfied with their university experience.

Live in the heart of the university experience! King’s University College offers much more than a convenient place to live on campus – it offers countless opportunities to enhance your university learning and to share the daily excitement and activity of your first year of university with other students. The present University site, donated by the City of Port Arthur, was occupied on October 2, 1957.

Second-year Arts courses were added in 1960-61, and on March 3, 1962, the original Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology Act was amended to give the College “university powers” to establish faculties, and “to confer university degrees” in Arts and Science. The first degrees in Arts and Science were granted on May 5, 1965.

The Lakehead University Act, 1965, was given royal assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario on June 22, 1965, and came into force on July 1, 1965. The Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology, thereafter known as “Lakehead University”, was continued under this new charter.

In 2006, Lakehead University opened its first branch campus in southern Ontario. The new campus is currently situated in a renovated historic building, Heritage Place, at 1 Colborne Street West in Orillia, Ontario, and has a capacity to accommodate 500 students. In 2007, a capital campaign was launched to finance the construction of a permanent campus in Orillia.

Lakehead began as a university with a dual role. It is a university in the north with the responsibility of bringing to Northwestern Ontario an understanding of a broad range of the basic academic disciplines as well as knowledge of the province, nation, and world. It is also a university for the North with the responsibility of gathering knowledge about the region for use in social, economic, and cultural development and for delivery to the rest of the province, nation, and world.

In adapting to its environment over the years, Lakehead’s character and dual role have made it distinctive in the Ontario University system. Today, Lakehead is a comprehensive university with a reputation for innovative programs and cutting-edge research. It is home to the west campus of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and offers an extensive array of courses and programs through its office of Continuing Education and Distributed Learning.

With a main campus located in Thunder Bay, Ontario and a campus in Orillia, Ontario, Lakehead’s goal in the next five to ten years is to rank among the top 25 research-intensive universities in Canada.

Campus Housing

Lakehead University Residence has housing accommodations for 1195 students in the Residence Halls, Townhouse and Apartment style residences. The Residence Halls are traditional dormitory style residences are co-ed and are comprised of shared, basic single and single rooms. Students coming from high school are housed in the Residence Halls. The Townhouse and Apartment style residences are single room, four bedroom units reserved for upper year students.

Students in the Residence Halls enjoy the benefits of an all-you-can-eat meal plan, seven days a week. As the townhouses and apartments have full kitchens, students may purchase optional meal plans from the University’s food caterer to assist with their busy class schedules.

Based on student demand, Residence will offer Wellness areas. These may include quiet areas (an environment that is quieter than the dormitory norm) and/or alcohol-free areas.

Residence rooms are all fully furnished. Facilities in the Residence complex include Dan’s Diner and Nick’s Garage (after hours food outlets), vending machines, coin laundry, a social centre, bicycle storage and study rooms.

All Residence bedrooms are equipped with Internet, Cable TV and telephone access (long distance extra). Some housing is available that is barrier free accessible. Unfortunately Residence does not have married or family housing on campus during the fall and winter terms.

Athletics and Recreational Facilities

Athletics is an integral part of the University lifestyle that is vital to the educational development of each and every student. A focused athletics program creates a University environment that fosters friendship, goodwill and overall fitness. Athletics enhances Lakehead’s image by adding diversity and richness to University life.

Lakehead University’s dynamic and varied Athletics Department recognizes the necessity for comprehensive campus recreation programs and works hard to make students’ time at the University as enjoyable as possible. Lakehead University offers a variety of Varsity and Club level sports listed below. An extensive selection of intramurals are offered through Campus Recreation. Students are urged to come out and support the Thunderwolves as they compete at events throughout Thunder Bay.

Lakehead University students enjoy extensive fitness facilities at the C.J.Sanders Fieldhouse and The Hangar. The University is proud to offer the 15,000 square foot Thunderdome gymnasium, an indoor running track and soccer field, a state-of-the-art Wolves’ Den fitness centre, a 50-metre eight- lane swimming pool, cardio room, outdoor sports fields, outdoor beach volleyball court, Kinesiology labs, squash courts, and change rooms complete with saunas and tanning beds.

Through its continued dedication to innovative education and ground-breaking research, the University has earned its reputation as one of the leading post-secondary institutions in Canada. McMaster continues in its commitment to be Canada’s most student-centred research university.

McMaster’s large, attractive campus, the interior of which is open only to pedestrians and cyclists, is at the western end of Lake Ontario. Nearby attractions include Cootes Paradise, the Bruce Trail, the Niagara Escarpment, the Waterfront Trail, and the Royal Botanical Gardens.

The University is minutes from downtown Hamilton, and the activities that a major city has to offer. Buses from the region’s public transit system make frequent stops on campus, facilitating travel between McMaster, Hamilton, and the surrounding area.

The campus has grown immensely since the University officially moved to Hamilton in 1930. The original six buildings, all still in use, were added to over the years, and now there are 56 buildings on McMaster’s campus.

History

Historically, McMaster University is the outgrowth of educational work initiated by Baptists in central Canada as early as the 1830′s. Named after Senator William McMaster (1811-1887), who bequeathed substantial funds to endow “a Christian school of learning”, the University was incorporated under the terms of an act of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in 1887. The new University (housed in McMaster Hall in Toronto) offered courses in arts and theology. Degree programs began in 1890, with degrees first being conferred in 1894.

In 1930 the University moved from Toronto to Hamilton, the forty-first academic session opening on the present site. The University’s lands and new buildings were secured through gifts from graduates, members of the churches of the Baptist Convention of Ontario and Quebec, and citizens of Hamilton.

Until 1957, the Governors of the University were elected by the Baptist Convention of Ontario and Quebec. In that year, the University became a non-denominational private institution. The historic Baptist connection was continued through the separate incorporation and affiliation of a theological school, McMaster Divinity College.

Clubs & Organizations

McMaster University is home to many different clubs and organizations. You’re sure to find something that’s right for you.

Student Housing

McMaster University boasts 12 smoke-free residence buildings – totaling approximately 3700 bed spaces. Approximately 2900 spaces are reserved for incoming first-year students. Select one of the following building links to learn more information about each residence:
<p
