Bishop’s University is a predominantly residential, undergraduate university. Our primary concern is offering students a quality education in arts, sciences, business, and education. Faculty

Bishop’s University boasts some of Canada’s best university professors. Our 125 full time faculty members are involved in extensive research and publishing – however they have chosen to work at Bishop’s because they love to teach and work with undergraduate students. Great emphasis is put on personal contact between students and professors through small classes and frequent use of seminars, laboratories, and tutorials.

Bishop’s 550 acre campus boasts 25 buildings including seven residences, two libraries, two theatres, outstanding classrooms, laboratory and athletic facilities, an arena, a historic chapel, a music recital hall, and a daycare. History

The University was founded as Bishop’s College in 1843 under the sponsorship of the Right Reverend G.J. Mountain, the Anglican Bishop of Quebec, with the assistance of a group of clergy and layman from the Eastern Townships. In 1853 Bishop’s received a royal charter granting it the right to confer degrees. Bishop’s remained under the aegis of the Church of England until 1947 when the Corporation of the University was reconstituted as a nondenominational body. Historical Timeline

Concordia University is a large, urban university in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The university’s two campuses are set approximately 7 km apart: Sir George Williams campus in the downtown core of Montreal, and Loyola campus in the residential west-end of Montreal. They are connected by a free shuttle bus service for students, faculty and staff.

The University currently employs over 2,000 academic personnel, including full-time and part-time faculty, many of whom are professionals drawn from the artistic community, high-tech industries, and the business world, as well as a number of professional librarians. History

Concordia University has been in existence since 1974, but its two founding institutions — Loyola College and Sir George Williams University — have a considerably longer history.

The name of the university comes from the motto of the City of Montreal, “Concordia Salus,” which means “well-being through harmony.”

In 1968, in the wake of the Parent Commission Report, the Quebec government asked Loyola and Sir George Williams to consider some form of union. Negotiations began in 1969 and continued on and off over the next four years.

While a number of possible models were considered, including that of a loose federation, the solution finally adopted was that of an integrated institution, Concordia University, operating under the existing Sir George Williams charter. The legal existence of Concordia dates from August 24, 1974.

Art and Culture

Concordia’s three art galleries present professional and student-run exhibitions, provide research space and house important permanent collections.

The Leonard and Bina Ellen Art Gallery, located in Concordia’s McConnell Library Building, presents exhibitions of contemporary Canadian and international art, produces related publications and organizes a program of artist and curator talks, public debates, concerts and film screenings. It is also home to a permanent collection that comprises nearly 1700 works by mainly Canadian artists, created over the course of the 20th century.

The FOFA Gallery is an exhibition and research space that celebrates the excellence of Concordia University’s Faculty of Fine Arts and reflects its creative diversity, activities and interests.

The VAV Gallery is a democratically run student exhibition space, the only one of its kind in Canada, that offers a glimpse into the sensibilities of a new generation of visual artists to both the Concordia community and the wider Montreal public.

Recreation and Athletics

The Department of Recreation and Athletics’ facilities can be found on both campuses.

The Loyola campus facility is the focal point of Stingers varsity sports and intramural leagues. It also hosts a small number of instructional activities. The facility includes two full-length, state-of-the-art artificial playing surfaces with lighting, one of which is a 4000-seat stadium; the Ed Meagher Arena; a gymnasium; and a modest weight room.

Our new fitness centre – located on the Sir George Williams campus in the Engineering and Visuals Arts Pavilion – is a comprehensive workout facility and is the focal point of instructional programs.

Student Residences

Residence accommodation is guaranteed for first-year students admitted by June 15th and is granted on a first-come, first-served basis after that date. If you requested to live in residence on your initial application, the status of your residence offer will be indicated on your acceptance letter from McGill Admissions and on Minerva. If you have been offered a space in residence, you must confirm your room reservation on Minerva and pay your deposit before the June 15th deadline to secure your spot.

If you will not be living in residence, it is best to start looking early for an apartment or room to rent. Montreal offers many interesting and diverse neighbourhoods to live in and most are easily accessible by public transportation.

The Off-Campus Housing Office can help with your search, and offers important information about your rights as a tenant and useful tips for finding great apartments. Students often post housing ads in McGill’s classifieds, and the First-Year Office offers advice for apartment-hunters as well.

Athletics and Recreation

In keeping with McGill University’s commitment to education and innovation, Athletics and Recreation vows to provide students and staff opportunities to participate in sport and physical activity within an inclusive environment that values health, well-being, and fairplay. We strive to instil within our community the values of academic and sporting excellence along with the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle.

Whether it be exercise classes, martial arts, intramurals, or recreational sports, Campus Recreation offers the McGill community plenty of ways to get in shape.

Like your exercise a little less structured? Drop by the McGill Sports Complex for a pick-up game of basketball, volleyball, badminton, or soccer. Or grab a partner and play squash or tennis. The Campus Recreation program is a great way to stay active and meet new friends.

From the spectacular Percival Molson Stadium, located in the heart of bustling Montreal, to the gymnasiums, tracks, courts, all-purpose activity rooms, fitness facilities, and pool, McGill students, staff, faculty, and community members benefit from some of the finest recreation and athletics facilities in the country.

Join or create a team and play in any one of the fifteen intramural leagues. All full-time McGill students are eligible to participate in this popular program that combines competitive athletics with the philosophy of inclusion, participation, and fair play. Individuals are also welcome to participate by becoming free agents and signing on with an established team.

McGill staff and alumni who have purchased Sports Complex memberships may also compete in intramural activities.

The intramural sports program offers all full-time McGill students, as well as staff and alumni with Sports Complex memberships, the opportunity to participate in competitive sport. Individuals are encouraged to participate in the spirit of fair play and good sportsmanship. Depending on the sport, most intramural games take place on week-nights after 17h00, and on weekends beginning at 9h00.

Most sports are divided into three categories: men’s, women’s, and co-recreational. Individuals may not participate on two teams within the same league. However, participation in a gender league (men or women) and a co-recreational league is permitted. And each league is divided into three levels (divisions) of play: competitive, intermediate, and recreational.

The Université de Montréal is one of Canada’s major research centres. With its two affiliated schools-the École Polytechnique and the HEC Montréal-and its network of affiliated hospitals, it brings together 2,300 professors and researchers from all the fundamental disciplines, some 300 research units, and one of Canada’s largest student bodies at the master’s and doctoral levels. The University earmarks close to $400 million for basic and applied research each year, making it Canada’s second most active university in the field. Libraries Network

Some two and a half million books, two million audiovisual documents, 45,000 periodicals and 450 computer stations make up the Université de Montréal’s library resources available to users throughout the campus. UdeM’s 18 libraries, which are all specialized as well as complimentary to one another, are linked by Atrium, a computerized catalogue that helps students quickly locate documents and avoid needless running around. The arts and humanities library located in the Samuel Bronfman Building is UdeM’s largest library in terms of the number of publications and users, and houses the University’s well-conserved rare books and equally rich collection of archives.

The Université de Montréal has a large technological infrastructure to support its teaching and research missions. In addition to its high-tech multimedia rooms, UdeM’s computer resources include over 1,200 work stations especially reserved for educational activities. Athletics and Recreation

The Université de Montréal boasts one of Quebec’s largest sports complexes. Open to the university community and the general public, CEPSUM offers users of all ages an impressive sports facility: indoor pool and rink, training room, racquetball courts, gyms, indoor track, stadium and outdoor field. A Thriving Musical Hub

For musicians and music lovers alike, UdeM is tuned in to Montreal’s music scene. It has one of Canada’s most vibrant faculties of music and organizes over 500 public events which attract over 100,000 people each year. The Faculty’s talented professors and students play in a variety of musical genres, from the Baroque period to contemporary composers; jazz, calypso, opera and Gregorian chant can all be heard through the faculty’s halls. One of Quebec’s only true concert halls dedicated exclusively to musical performance, the Salle Claude-Champagne also serves as a creative piazza for various musical groups, including the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne and the Atelier de musique contemporaine.

An International Community

With over 5,000 foreign students enrolled last year, UdeM is considered one of Canada’s most cosmopolitan universities. Its foreign student office (Bureau des étudiants internationaux) provides guidance and information to foreign students, while English-speaking students from other Canadian provinces receive help and advice from the coordinator of the Anglophone Student Support Program. The University of Sherbrooke welcomes over 30,000 students, including over 14,000 full-time. The faculty has more than 2,300 people, including loaded and lecturers and professors and teachers of clinical teaching. In all, the University employs 6,000 people.

The Main Campus of the University of Sherbrooke, located at the foot of Mount John S. Bourque in the west of the city, includes the management of the institution, support services and most faculties.

Located in the Fleurimont, the Health Campus includes the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Institute of Pharmacology of Sherbrooke, Center Hospitalier Universitaire de Sherbrooke, Center for Clinical Research and Development Center for Biotechnology Eastern Townships.

Both campuses are equipped with residences that can accommodate a total of 1340 students. The newest complex of residences, the student, has two buildings in downtown Sherbrooke and a third located on Galt Street West. The two buildings of downtown offers 119 rooms in 34 apartments, while the Galt Street West can accommodate 36 students in as many rooms type “residence.” The student population is managed cooperatively by the residents.

The University is also located in Montérégie, where his Longueuil Campus offers all the support equipment and logistics necessary for the hundreds of proposed programs. The campus contributes to the development of social and economic environment of the region by its ability to meet their needs and sense of innovation.

The University offers its medical program in Saguenay and Moncton through partnerships with the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi and the University of Moncton. These organizations address the need to train doctors in the region to encourage them to remain on site after completing their studies. They are almost 50 new doctors will graduate each year in Moncton and Saguenay.

Faculties and Programs

We found nine faculties at the University of Sherbrooke: Administration, Law, Education, Physical Education and Sports, Engineering, Humanities, Medicine and Health Sciences, Science and Theology, Ethics and Philosophy. The schools share 45 baccalaureate programs (not counting the many possible combinations of minor), 52 masters programs and 29 doctoral. Most faculties also offer certificate programs and diplomas as well as firmware. In total, over 340 training programs are offered in all areas of human activity.

It is the only university located outside major urban centers of Quebec from a medical school and law school and offers the three cycles of university education, as broad a range of curriculum. The University of Sherbrooke owes its growth and influence of a tradition of innovation that continues to animate his work.

Innovation

Thus, the University of Sherbrooke was the first francophone university and the second Canadian university to adopt a cooperative education program. The University of Sherbrooke is now considered the leader of this teaching method that allows many students and students add to the knowledge received at the University practical experience in rural work through paid internships.

The University of Sherbrooke was also the first in world to offer a course in Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in French, the first in Canada to offer a master’s degree in taxation, first in Quebec to offer a bachelor’s degree in administration and an MBA within the cooperative, also the first to launch a master’s degree in accounting sciences in one year and an institute of entrepreneurship.

The Université du Québec is a network of schools comprised of the following nine locations:

The University of Quebec at Montreal (UQAM)

Founded April 19, 1969, University of Quebec at Montreal, which had about 37,000 students in 1997, now has nearly 50,000. The letters, arts and humanities were first its areas of strength, but since the 70s, it has enriched many programs in management sciences and pure sciences and applied. It offers more 300 programs through its six faculties and the School of Management. Teluq, tele-university that is part of the institution, account number about 20,000 students.

The University of Quebec at Trois-Rivières (UQTR)

Founded March 19, 1969, University of Quebec at Trois-Rivieres had 10,711 students in fall 2006. Offering 150 programs of study, it is particularly active in research in the fields of pulp and paper, hydrogen, SMEs, ecology and health.

The University of Quebec at Chicoutimi (UQAC)

Founded March 19, 1969, University of Quebec at Chicoutimi is attended by nearly 6400 students in fall 2006. Its original programs include the American Indian Studies, the outdoors and tourism, and physical activity.

The University of Quebec at Rimouski (UQAR)

The Center of European Studies of Rimouski has become an institution in its own June 13, 1973. Approximately 5,400 students attend its two campuses and Rimouski Levis fall 2006. His areas of research recognized include marine science, regional development and the northern location.

The University of Quebec in Outaouais (UQO)

Founded in March 1981 under the name University of Quebec at Hull, the institution changed its name in July 2002 to adopt the University of Quebec in Outaouais. Its enrollment is approximately 5600 students in Fall 2006. Its programs include the sciences of education, social work and psycho-education, the health sciences, information technology and increasingly the natural sciences.

The University of Quebec in Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT)

The newest of the network of institutions, the University of Quebec in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, founded in October 1983, celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2008. In fall 2006, about 2,650 students attend the school. Its researchers are particularly active in the mining and forestry, but also in health sciences and in regional development.

The École de Technologie Supérieure (ETS)

Founded in March 1974, École de technologie supérieure is distinguished by its teaching and its cooperative ties with its partners in technology and industry. In fall 2006, more than 4,700 students attend its campus in Montreal. Among its areas of excellence include the transfer of expertise, aerospace, biomedical engineering, imaging and 3D grids.

Institut National de Recherche Scientifique (INRS)

Founded in December 1969, the National Institute of Scientific Research offers programs graduate within four research centers: Water, Earth and Environment, Energy, Materials and Telecomunications, human health, animal and environmental health; Urbanization, Culture and Society. In fall 2006, more than 600 students attend the INRS, divided almost equally between the master’s programs and doctoral degrees.

The École Nationale d’Administration Publique (ENAP)

Founded in June 1969, The National Academy of Public Administration offers graduate programs as well as short courses to nearly 1840 students in fall 2006.

At the forefront of technology in its campus located in downtown Montreal, the Université du Québec – École de Technologie Supérieure (ETS) offers an environment conducive to an exciting student life. Its educational programs specializing in applied and engineering-oriented technology transfer company, are designed to meet industry needs.

Since its founding in 1974, the formula for Cooperative Education – alternating quarters of the way with paid internships in industry – is one of the strengths of the ETS.

The environment of high level that the proposed ETS is based on the expertise of its faculty, personalized coaching and training focused on practical work, laboratory exercises and projects in support of regular lessons. Because of its dynamism and its increasing customer base and its curriculum in recent years, the ETS will expand its campus to provide an environment more suitable to his students.

Another notable feature, the ETS is the only academic institution in Quebec to offer baccalaureate programs in engineering, specifically designed for technical college graduates and ensuring continuity in their training. All undergraduate programs lead to admission to the Order of Engineers of Quebec.

The distinct approach of ETS, its unique partnership with industry, plans for international cooperation with many countries and applied research activities of the professors are among the great schools and engineering faculties in Quebec and Canada.

Studying at ETS

At ETS, all courses are given in French. Students must therefore have a reasonable knowledge of this language. However, numerous reference books used by professors are written in English.

ETS welcomes each year students whose mother tongue is not French; in most cases, they quite rapidly adapt to their new language of study.

• The amount of money dedicated to research can go up to 7 million dollars annually. About 40% of that comes from industrial research contracts.

Born of a desire for an institution of higher learning in public administration in Québec, ENAP is the public administration university. Its mission is to contribute to the development of public administration both theoretically and in practice.

ENAP divides its mission into four broad areas: training, services to organizations, research, and services offered in partnership. In carrying out this mission, ENAP seeks to set the standard for public administration in Québec.

ENAP offers graduate study programs that are at once adapted to the needs of individuals and public organizations and designed to meet the objectives set out by universities and professional bodies. They may be taken part time or full time in Québec City or Montréal and in most cases at all three satellite campuses, in Gatineau, Trois-Rivières, and Saguenay.

ENAP is for both practicing professionals and young undergraduates looking to make a career as public administration analysts or advisors. There are courses to suit everyone. ENAP also offers 12 short 15 credit courses for those looking to take things one step at a time. There are also special training courses for federal public service managers. The Université du Québec – École Nationale d’Administration Publique was created in 1969 to give Quebec an institution of higher education dedicated to the field of public administration and contribute to its development both as a field of knowledge and as a field practice. ENAP is one of nine universities in the network of the University of Quebec.

The headquarters of the Université du Québec – École Nationale d’Administration Publique is located in Quebec in the St. Roch neighborhood in the heart of the new downtown. The school is bordered by St-Roch garden and is close to bars, restaurants and transportation.

The building is new ENAP and houses an auditorium with 200 seats, modern and comfortable classrooms and computer labs equipped with advanced technology and room video conferencing. The library is vast and spacious, integrated network of libraries at the University of Quebec.

Academic Programs

ENAP offers 2nd and 3rd cycle programs of study that the university has adapted to the needs of both individuals and public organizations.

Staff education and research has about forty people from various sources, having studied at major universities in Europe and North America.
