Nipissing University

Nipissing University

While the roots of Nipissing University extend back to the 1900′s with the North Bay Normal School, Nipissing University College was formed in 1967 as an affiliate of Laurentian University. Nipissing University received its charter as an independent University in 1992. Today, Nipissing is proud to be a primarily undergraduate university with a reputation for excellence in teacher education, arts, science and professional programs.

Students will find themselves in a high quality academic environment that is student-focused and based on personal teaching practices, innovative approaches to learning, and a growing research culture. Nipissing is committed to playing a positive role in the educational, social, cultural and economic life of North Bay and Northeastern Ontario.

Nipissing University is situated on an escarpment overlooking Lake Nipissing in North Bay, Ontario. Nipissing is considered one of the safest universities in Canada. It’s centrally located, just 3.5 hours north of Toronto and only 4 hours northwest of Ottawa.

There are many year-round activities to enjoy, both on and off-campus. From viewing the beautiful fall colours along Duchesney Falls in September to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter, you’ll have every opportunity to enjoy 20 kilometres of trails right on-campus. Students can sign out cross-country skis and snowshoes free-of-charge from the Athletics Centre. Outdoor enthusiasts may also want to check out Jack Pine Hill, located just 10 minutes from Nipissing. This facility is well-known for its mountain biking in the summer and its downhill skiing, snowboarding and tubing in the winter. During the winter season you can also take in a “good-ole-hockey game” as North Bay’s Junior ‘A’ hockey team, The Skyhawks, defeat their opponents at Memorial Gardens (the Skyhawks were NOJHL champions in 2003).

Student Residence

Living in residence is all about meeting new people and exploring new ideas. It’s also about studying, socializing and making friends for life!

Nipissing has two housing styles to choose from. There are three suite-styled residences and a townhouse style complex all within walking distance to campus. If you are interested in sustainable living you will want to check out the Ecovillage as a residence option.  The Ecovillage is a student-led project that aims to enable ecologically-conscious living and promote campus environmental sustainability.

If it’s your first time away from home, take comfort in the fact that our supportive residence staff is available to help you adjust. Each residence has a full-time Residence Life Supervisor who works closely with a team of senior students known as Residence Dons. This team is trained and available on-site to assist students with problems and to help organize many fun events throughout the year.

Student Experience

Nipissing University is one place that you will never feel lost among the masses. This great sense of belonging comes from small classes, dedicated faculty and an excellent student life program. Students will find it easy to meet classmates, pursue interests and make Nipissing their home.

Starting with the excitement and energy of Frosh Week, new students will meet their peers and take a tour of the city. For those moving into residence, the res team will help you settle into your new surroundings and introduce you to clubs and activities such as Movies Under The Stars and coffee houses. Keep an eye out for Club days in early September, it’s an easy opportunity to find students with common interests and engage in the activities you value.

The Nipissing University Student Union (NUSU) also organizes events throughout the year, including concerts at the campus pub and a three-day winter carnival. The Athletics Centre manages the ever-popular intramural program, where all students are welcome to participate in sports and activities of their choice from Frisbee golf to ball-hockey.

Student Services

Nipissing’s Student Services can help you get the most out of your post-secondary experience. Nipissing’s Student Affairs Office provides a number of services such as international exchanges, career planning, academic advising, mentoring, personal counselling and aboriginal services.

For many years our students have ranked Nipissing’s Student Services in the top 3 in the Globe and Mail University Report Card, competing against universities across Canada. Even though our students tell us we’re doing well, we are continuing to expand our services and offerings. For example, in 2009, Nipissing expanded its Varsity Athletics program to offer a men’s Hockey team!
